Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day

You may have heard that March is National Nutrition Month. . . and its totally okay if you haven’t. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) is heavily promoting this new message: “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day!”

What does “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day!” mean to you?

As a Fort Collins Nutritionist, I may not be totally in line with everything the Academy promotes but I really like this message. Here’s why:

Eat right is an abstract concept but it takes into account what you think eating right means. If you think that “eating right” means eating lots of high quality produce including fresh vegetables and leafy greens (and I would totally agree), then this message fits you and your beliefs. There is no right-or-wrong to eating right!

Your way focuses on you and how you eat. Again, there is no one right or wrong way to eat. Some people eat 3 meals and no snacks, some people eat 3 meals and 2 to 3 snacks, and some people graze all day long. If your eating style works for you, gives you energy, and makes you feel good– then that is what you should do!

Every day emphasizes that healthy eating and good nutrition is not a once in a while thing. . . it is an every day thing. It involves every bite of food you put in your mouth.

So. . . how on earth do you “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day!”??Veggies in basket

Try one or two of these tips to get you started (or as a reminder):

  • Try to make half of your plate veggies
  • Plan ahead for what you’re going to eat, when, and where
  • Eat slowly and really enjoy your food
  • Aim for 3 cups of veggies and/or leafy greens and 1 to 2 cups of fruit each day
